Developments in the Chinese markets were particularly pleasing, with 3,321 automobiles sold here in July 2005 ? that is twice as many (+ 100.1%) as in the same month last year (1,660). In the area of Asia as a whole, the company achieved a rise of 35.9% in July: the number of cars delivered rose from 7,072 to 9,639 vehicles. Sales in North America rose in July 2005 by 13.1% to 28,713 automobiles (previous year: 25,396). In Western Europe, the rate of increase was 9.0% (63,090 / previous year: 57,895). Dr. Michael Ganal, member of the Board of Management at BMW AG responsible for sales and marketing, said, "We have expanded our leading position in the premium segment worldwide. Where the entire premium segment worldwide has grown by around two percent in the year to date, we have clearly set ourselves apart with a rise of 10%."
BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series market leaders in their segment
One of the driving forces behind this growth is the new BMW 3 Series sedan. In less than five months since its market launch in March, 94,622 vehicles have already been sold. This is 85.0% more than sales of the predecessor model in the comparable period from its market launch in April 1998 (51,155). "This means that this car, like its predecessor, is the worldwide market leader amongst the mid-range premium sedans right from the start", said Ganal.
With a segment share of around 25%, the BMW 5 Series also remains the clear market leader in its relevant competitive environment. Year-to-date, 131,388 BMW 5 Series were delivered, which meant that the high sales level of the previous year (132,192 / -0.6%) was maintained.
Over 48,000 MINI Convertibles already delivered since market launch Sales of the MINI brand rose in July 2005 by 7.1% compared with the same month last year to reach 17,115 automobiles (previous year: 15,987). For the period up to and including July 2005, the number of MINI delivered rose by 12.7% to 125,231 vehicles (previous year: 111,163). Almost one in four MINI vehicles sold (23.6% / 29,495) was a convertible. This means that the product mix has improved even further. Since the market launch of the "topless" version a good year ago in July 2004, MINI dealers have sold 48,236 MINI Convertibles.
Rolls-Royce delivered 45 Phantoms to customers in July 2005 (previous year: 39/ +15.4%). Year-to-date sales reached 330 vehicles (previous year: 358 / -7.8%).
Motorcycle sales for July 2005 totalled 9,877 vehicles (previous year: 9,852 / + 0.3%). For the seven months ending July, the number of BMW motorcycles delivered rose by 15.0% to 67,164 (previous year: 58,412).
