The slick BMW M2 and the X4 M40i "coupe" will make their first appearance at the Detroit auto show in a few weeks. They?ll be joined by the new X1, 7-Series, plug-in 330e and the company?s two all-electrics.

BMW says the M2 is ?highly anticipated,? and for the first time, we?re going to go ahead and agree with a press release. The coupe gets a 3.0-liter I6 with a twin-scroll turbocharger helping deliver 365 hp at 6,500 rpm and 343 lb-ft of torque at just 1,400 rpm. The car?s overboost function, which activates when you push the pedal past the detent in the stroke, adds 26 more lb-ft for short bursts.

A dual-clutch transmission is optional; a rev-matching six-speed manual is standard.

Power goes to the rear wheels through a fully variable Active M Differential. That combination is good for a 0-60 time of 4.2 seconds, or 4.4 with the manual gearbox. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

The M cars are most at home on a track, hence the modified oil sump that limits oil movement to keep everything lubed up -- especially under hard acceleration (the M2 gets a launch control function). Additionally, an extra oil pump sends the oil back to the rear part of the sump under heavy braking.
