Diagnostic Tool / Fault Code Reader

Hi Everyone,

I recently puchased a 1997 2.8L Z3. I've noticed my Check Engine sign came on, and the BMW dealerships charge CAN $99 just to check what the problem is.
For this reason I am wondering if I should purchase an Engine Fault Code Reader which can reset the Check Engine sign also..... for US $150.

The only one I could find was:

Does anyone have any experience with this and do you recommend purchasing this device to save in the long run? If so, are there any other places I should be looking (preferabbly in Canada).

I don't have any experience with the reset tool, but if you service the vehicle yourself, it's probably a good value.
