It was just announced that car washing at home will become illegal on January 1. As if things could not get worse, cars can only be washed at commercial car washes that use recycled water. I think this puts the hand wash places out. So it is either go to a commercial wash with all that potentially damaging equipment and recycled water or don’t wash your car.

So it's ok to fill that large pool in Vegas, or for the Casinos to have those fancy dancing fountains, but you better not wash your car at home. I'd like to try that law in the courts!

Your not suggesting they brake the law now are you big daddy? [:D]

oh course this law is to preserve water and you HAVE TO use recycled water? yes? ok then fill your bath with water wash your face or hands then use that water to fill your bucket to wash the car. hey presto your using recycled water [;)]

Thats why you should live in a city near a lake [thumb]. Seriously though... this is the stupidest law... they better have outlawed lawn sprinklers first.

[thumb] That is my thinking. The water use limits are so unfair here. I have a small pool and spa that I have covered all year to prevent evaporation and keep them clean. I had calculated that based upon summer evaporation, my pool needed 400-500 gallons of water per week to maintain the water level without a cover (this high evaporation is during the summer). With a cover it can go a month and may only drop 1/4 inch.

So my thinking is, if my little backyard pool evaporates 400-500 gallons per week if not covered, what must those big fountains take that spray water everywhere combined with such a big evaporation surface? I could not even guess, but some have said it is equivalent to a very large number of homes on a daily basis.

it will be interesting to see how all of this plays out in the next couple of months.

If you parked you car on your lawn to wash it, could you say you watering you lawn?
I am going to try it. I think there are so many people that are saying they will not follow this restriction that it will be interesting to see what happens. The fines are $20 for the first time and then the fines double each time.

I am washing it at home anyway. I have talked with my neighbors, several are BMW owners, and all of my surrounding neighbors also have boats except me, and we all agree that conservation is important but it must involve everyone. Essentially, we are not going to honor this new law so I guess they can take us all in.

So you may see us on the national news, it will probably be something like "several arrested for washing cars and one for spraying off boat trailer, prosecutors are asking for the maximum", you know it will be us. [^] [fake]

Must be the greenhouse effect...we are experiencing the same drought conditions here in Sydney, Australia. If you get caught wasting water (there are "water police"and one guy got caught at 5am when his lawn sprinklers turned on)it is a $220 fine. Under no circumstances are you allowed to wash your car with a hose, you can use a bucket and rinse the car with one of those sprinkling cans. I personally fill a bucket with water and soak a microfibre towel, wring it out as much as you can and wipe the car over in the direction the wind flows over the body(basically front to back, but starting at the roof),turning the towel as it gets soiled. When that is done I then get another mf towel and spritz it with meguiar's quick detail and wipe the car taking care to wipe off QD before it dries with another mf towel.

that's a whole lot of evaporation going on.........I add maybe 2" of water a month during the peak summer months and it is never covered,.....and I have a fairly big pool, sprinklers run an hour every night (summer).......water bill averages $52.00 per month and that includes garbage.........what is your water bill average??

WOW, that is not bad....2" per month. Mine will drop 2+ tiles, 2" tiles, so 4"+ per week, but we also have the high heat 110+ and low humidity 5-8% and it just sucks up the water. Interesting point, Las Vegas measures the official temp at the airport, one of the cooler places in town, and some distance above the tower, my house runs 10 or more over that as do many in the summer. It's a tourist thing to not scare them off.

My water bill was $86.00 for October and the high for the year was $132.00 in July. I am sure it would be at least 160.00 if the pool was not covered. The only problem with covering the pool is the heat, it will increase the water temp to around 105 so it needs to be uncovered while prior to use and some type of a fountain used to cool the water. I did find a cover that reflects heat, much better, keeps the water under 90-92.
